The Super Seven of

 Supervision

You and I work in a world of apple juice and graham crackers, playgrounds and naptimes, time-outs and "I'm sorries," and the magic "do over." But if you fail to provide proper supervision - or if you are even accused of it - you will find yourself yanked suddenly and abruptly into a totally different world where "I'm sorry" doesn't matter and there are no "do overs!" If a child is hurt, it's too late.

Supervision is basic
to the prevention of harm.

Adults who pay attention to and who understand young children's behaviors are in the best position to safeguard their well-being.

The point of proper supervision is to keep children safe from harm.

Safe from physical injury. Safe from emotional or psychological injury (such as bullies or sex play). And to keep you safe from litigation.

Because of the profession you have chosen, it's understood that you do not want children to get hurt or harmed in any way, especially while they are in your care. Some people have the attitude, "Children fall down. Children get hurt. It happens! It's part of being a kid."

It's may be part of being a kid, but it's only part of being a kid when they are at home, not while they are in your care.

Did you know that "Child Care Accidents" is a new area of specialty for attorneys?  Just like workman's compensation, bankruptcy, accidents with 18 wheelers, and pharmaceutical lawsuits.

When it is your word against "theirs," you will lose. You need proof. You need to know how to properly supervise children. You need a reputation as a conscientious caregiver.

In the event of a lawsuit, you could be legally labeled as a perpetrator of abuse or neglect against children and that label will follow you for the rest of your life. You will not be allowed to work with children in any capacity - not in child care, public education, private education, health care, nothing. AND you probably will not even be able to accompany your own child on school field trips with his class.

 STAFF NEWS:

SUPERVISION

What do YOU do that places children at risk?

Do you...

  • Chat with the teacher across the hall?

  • Look at your cell phone for any reason? (time, see who called, see who is texting you, make a call, send a text?)

  • Turn your back to children? (perhaps while performing teacher duties such as answering the intercom, chatting with parents, directing repairmen, etc.)

  • Turn your back toward some of the children? (perhaps while cleaning the bathroom or helping some of the children at the art table?)

  • Fail to clarify with your co-teacher which children you are supervising in the group at each part of the day?

  • Fail to consistently maintain the In/Out log?

  • Fail to conduct Name/Face Checks at each transition?

  • Chat with other teachers on the playground?

  • Stay in one spot?

  • Chat with teachers who are on duty when you are off duty? Or vice versa?

  • Sneak in a quick nap while the children are asleep?

  • Leave cleaning chemicals within children's reach?

  • Leave the medicine box unattended and within the children's reach while administering medication in the classroom?

  • Doze or veg out on the playground or in the nap room?

  • Have poor room arrangement with blindspots?

  • Sweep the floor after lunch while the other teacher is changing a diaper?

  • Change a diaper without also supervising other children?

  • Read a magazine during naptime instead of walking around actively supervising the children?

  • Make the nap room pitch dark so he children will sleep better?

PARENT

EWS IDEA

"Please turn off your vehicle, lock it and take your purse/valuables with you when you come to drop off or pick up your child each day.

Recent burglaries and arrests in North Texas point toward the strong possibility that members of an organized gang known as The Felony Lane Gang are operating in McKinney and surrounding cities.

This gang is originally from the Ft. Lauderdale Florida area and they primarily operate by targeting women at child care centers. While an unsuspecting female is parked at a child care center, suspects will burglarize the victims vehicle- quickly taking the victims purse. Once the suspects have a victim's identity and checks they use another victim's identity to cash stolen checks in the FELONY LANE, the farthest outside lane of a bank drive through.

Child care centers all over Texas have been targeted by this gang and hundreds of thousands of dollars have been stolen from banking institutions throughout the country.
